Life isn't easy for divers on the bottom of the world. Average temps in the Antarctic Ocean hover at a bone-rattling 27 degrees, and the hole you went into could freeze over. Bob Zook, chief engineer on a project funded by the National Science Foundation, developed the first remotely operated sub-sea vehicle capable of diving hundreds of feet in the Antarctic Ocean, making exploratory diving much safer. The Submersible Capable of under Ice Navigation and Imaging (SCINI) had its maiden voyage in the recent Antarctic "summer." Hear Bob talk about how he taught himself how to use SolidWorks and design an ROV from scratch while at McMurdo Station.
