Greening your home

Geothermal_2Tired of shockingly high heating and cooling bills? Do you want to reduce your home's carbon footprint? These factors prompted Garry Woods to design and build a home that was more eco-friendly. That project turned into a commercial enterprise called Greentec, a U.K. company that has grown 500 percent year over year since its founding in 2003. The company harnesses the earth's heat, enabling homeowners to heat and cool their houses for less than $200 a year. Hear his story!

Get the SCINI!

BobLife isn't easy for divers on the bottom of the world. Average temps in the Antarctic Ocean hover at a bone-rattling 27 degrees, and the hole you went into could freeze over. Bob Zook, chief engineer on a project funded by the National Science Foundation, developed the first remotely operated sub-sea vehicle capable of diving hundreds of feet in the Antarctic Ocean, making exploratory diving much safer. The Submersible Capable of under Ice Navigation and Imaging (SCINI) had its maiden voyage in the recent Antarctic "summer." Hear Bob talk about how he taught himself how to use SolidWorks and design an ROV from scratch while at McMurdo Station.
